Iran Censures Drone Attack Targeting Iraqi Premier

TEHRAN (IQNA) – Iran’s Foreign Ministry condemned an attack targeting Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi.

 

Foreign Ministry Spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh on Sunday condemned the drone attack that earlier in the day that was seen as an attempt to assassinate the Iraqi premier.

He called for everyone’s vigilance against plots targeting the security and progress of the Arab country, according to the Foreign Ministry’s website.

Khatibzadeh said such incidents are in line with the interests of those who have violated the stability, security, independence and territorial integrity of Iraq over the past 18 years and have pursued their ominous regional objectives by creating terrorist groups and fomenting sedition.

He expressed satisfaction that al-Kadhimi has not been hurt in the attack and hoped that the people, government and political currents in Iraq will help the development of the country with unity and solidarity.

He also reiterated the Islamic Republic of Iran’s constant and unchanging policy of supporting stability, security and peace in Iraq.

Earlier in the day, Al-Kadhimi, was subjected to a failed assassination attempt with a booby-trapped drone, according to Iraqi News Agency (INA).

The Security Media Cell stated in a statement that “a failed assassination attempt against the Prime Minister, the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces, by a booby-trapped drone, tried to target his residence in the Green Zone in Baghdad," noting that "the president was not harmed. He is in good health.”

The cell added, “The security forces are taking the necessary measures in connection with this failed attempt.”

Minutes later, the prime minister took to Twitter, saying that the missiles of treachery will not discourage the believers.

“I was and still am a redemption project for Iraq and the people of Iraq,” noting that “the missiles of treachery will not discourage the believers, and a hair will not be shaken in the stability and persistence of our security forces.”

“I am fine, thank God, among my people,” he said, calling for “calm and restraint from everyone, for the sake of Iraq.”
